Love (bet you didn’t see a love post coming)

Love (bet you didn’t see a love post coming)

IMG_1136A dear friend and colleague was cleaning out his office before changing jobs and gave me this tiny little book called “The Art of Eternal Love.”  Get your mind out of the gutter.  It’s about infinite love as a practice: focusing your love on that thing that exists beyond us and in everyone, and about using that love as a guide to motivate your decisions, thereby making decisions that are, quite simply, good.

This is not about to turn into a sad-girl-Kathy-comic anti-love post, I promise.  It’s just that when you put your faith and energy on an individual scale, you get returns on that same scale, whereas if you can focus on a wider, universal level, you get wider, universal compassion back.  Not to say that there won’t be assholes still around and bad days and anger and all of that–obviously those things will always exist.  But when I put my love on this wide angle focus, the individual negative things have less importance.  And when I shut the doors on the little bullshit (and I’ve been shutting doors like crazy, ya’ll don’t even KNOW), these really huge doors to beautiful things tend to swing open.

Also, since I haven’t talked about delicious things in a while, that’s a ridiculously easy “cake”: it’s layers of graham crackers, whipped cream, and strawberries stuck in the fridge for a few hours.  Holy, holy, deliciousness.  AND since there’s no heat, you can sit on the couch and read a book while your kids make it.  Take or leave my advice on love, but this here is goddamn priceless.  Add blueberries and make it about 4th of July.  Totally doing this for tomorrow.  Where are my kids?
